why Dragonflies?

You might have noticed the dragonflies in our logo. Dragonflies are a symbol of transformation, adaptability, and empowerment. They are delicate, yet incredibly strong. We believe that each of our clients has a unique dragonfly power within themselves to approach challenges with a sense of adaptability, resilience, and creativity.

OUR MISSION & PHILOSOPHY

It is our mission to holistically support each individual by providing creative arts therapies that center on their individual strengths, support needs, cultural contexts, identities, and goals. We strive to empower individuals of all ages through creative self-expression and promote the development of healthy relationships. We strive to co-create therapeutic relationships, experiences, and goals that meet our clients where they are and adapt as they grow. Our goal is to act in the best interests of the individuals being served, under all circumstances, by giving unconditional acceptance to clients in a safe, supportive and comfortable environment.

Exploring our cultural contexts and identities is an indispensable part of therapy. We are committed to advocating for social justice in our community and profession, making allyship an intentional daily practice, and providing accessible services for people experiencing identity-based oppression and marginalization. Each member of the team actively practices reflexivity and is committed to the ongoing improvement of our own multi-cultural competencies as helping professionals. We are an anti-racist and LGBTQIA2+ affirming workplace. We openly accommodate disabled music therapists who may seek employment here and the accessibility needs of our clients.

We are devoted to our clients, our community and our own. In addition to helping our client families grow and develop, The Sonatina Center is devoted to the growth and development of each provider; continuing education and research-based practice lay the foundation for our work. We are committed to the growth of our profession and actively advocate for the natural place of the creative arts in health care. We are committed to continually educating the public on the applications and outcomes of creative arts therapy and promoting the proven therapeutic value of professionally administered services from an educationally qualified and clinically trained therapist. We strive to maintain a high degree of professionalism and integrity, keep current on research, trends, repertoire, and techniques.

OUR STORY

We are a team of creative arts therapists offering music therapy, dance/movement therapy and mental health counseling services for children and adults throughout our communities. The Sonatina Center was founded by Marissa Scott in 2011. We saw our first clients in their homes, schools, and medical centers. As we have grown, we have moved into a beautiful space in Dover, NH with six individual therapy rooms and three medium size therapy rooms perfect for intimate size groups and workshops. Our accessible facility also houses a large waiting room, private restrooms with a changing table, and plenty of on-site parking. We partner with many organizations in the community to bring music and art therapy to schools, hospitals, community centers and assisted living facilities.

In 2023, The Sonatina Center expanded to Hagerstown, Maryland to offer services in the Washington County and surrounding areas.
